Ruta 88 is inspired by the phrase “I gave my colours to the rainbow” from Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and reflects on transformation and impermanence. The number 88 alludes to infinity and the passage between material and ethereal states. Symbols such as the butterfly, sunflower, and rainbow suggest cycles of change, renewal, and continuity, while abstract forms create a space where memory and imagination converge.
The number eight—an ancient symbol of infinity—has intrigued me for some time. There is also a butterfly native to northern Argentina, locally known as the Mariposa 88, named for the figure-eight marking on its wings. Route 88 alludes to the pursuit of something beyond the mundane and the visible; perhaps it serves as a metaphor for the act of painting itself.
The rainbow triangles are a recurring motif in my work and symbolize the Holy Trinity expressed through colour.
